Russia spans 11 time zones and 4 climate zones and borders 16 sovereign nations, making it the world’s largest country. In Moscow, colorful onion domes dot the skyline between high-rise apartments and medieval fortresses. In Saint Petersburg, Russia’s cultural center and former capital city, art nouveau and Stalinist structures mix with grand theaters and museums. While Russian is the most widely-spoken native language in Europe, the country is home to over 100 languages and ethnic groups. As the Kingdom of Rus, the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and now the Russian Federation, Russia's changing identities have built a complex and diverse 21st century culture rivaled by few.
